FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Short, honest answers. If yours isn't here, the help centre goes deeper.
- Is OutVault a password manager?
- No. OutVault is an encrypted vault for your documents, photos, notes and passwords together — one safe place for the things a cloud drive, a notes app and a password manager would otherwise scatter. It can hold passwords, but it is not a dedicated password manager and does not autofill logins in your browser.
- Do I need an account to use OutVault?
- No account is needed to use the vault on a single device — install it and start adding files straight away. An account only comes into it if you choose Premium to sync and share across devices, and even then your data stays encrypted, so the account never gives us the ability to read it.
- Does OutVault work offline?
- Yes, fully. The vault runs entirely on your device and never needs a connection to open, add or search your files. Syncing is the only thing that uses the internet, and it catches up on its own once you are back online.
- Can OutVault read my files?
- No. Everything is encrypted on your device before it is stored or synced, and we hold no key. That means we cannot read your files, be made to hand them over, or lose them in a breach — not as a policy we promise, but as a property of how the app is built.
- Which platforms can I use OutVault on?
- At launch OutVault runs on Windows, Android and a Chrome extension. macOS and iOS are in development and will follow. The same encrypted vault syncs across every platform it supports.
- How much does OutVault cost?
- The app is free, and the free version is a complete vault on your own devices — no trial, no expiry. Premium is a paid add-on for encrypted sync and share links across devices. Your files never depend on a subscription.
- What happens to my files if I stop paying?
- They stay on your devices. Premium adds syncing and sharing, not access to your own vault — your files were always stored locally and encrypted with your key, so cancelling only turns off sync and share links. Nothing is held hostage.
